3 Things Your Gardener Doesn’t Want You To Know
The Importance of Watering In order to not only look good, but to survive, your lawn and garden need the proper amount of water. In some countries, this is not an issue because there is ample supply of rainfall to keep roots moisturized. However, this is not the case in other countries and when it is apparent that your lawn and garden are not getting enough water, it is time for you to step in and do the job of Mother Nature. Some tips you should follow to properly water your lawn and garden are:
1. Pay attention to the color of your garden and lawn. A healthy lawn should exhibit a rich green color and should feel soft, not crunchy, under your feet. Any patches of yellow, straw like grass is a sign that more watering is needed.
2. You should water your lawn during a specific time of day when it is coolest. This can be either early in the morning or later on in the evening just after the sun sets.
3. You should water your lawn at least once a week and at least two times during a drought.
4. Do not over water. This will also damage your lawn and garden. Most grass requires about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week to stay healthy. You can either use a rain gauge to keep track of the amount of water you are supplying or you can use a small can the size of a tuna can or cat food can. Once the can fills up, you are done watering for the day.
Fertilize and Control Weeds Fertilization is another important part of having a health lawn and garden. You need to do this primarily in the spring when grass is newest. This will ultimately result in healthy growth. Try and buy fertilizers that contain a combination of nitrogen phosphates and potash. Also remember to weed eat or pull weeds from your lawn and garden.
After you’ve done your spring fertilization, you can go back and fertilize again in the summer as a part of maintenance. You can also incorporate a fertilizer with weed control at this point.
Aerate Your Lawn It is important to use your lawn aerator regularly. What is an aerator? It is a tool that will help turn the soil and create holes in the top portion of the soil so that grass roots can get enough water and air. This also allows earthworms (which are a natural form of fertilizer) in to do their work.
You want to use your aerator during the autumn and spring and only use it when your soil is damp. You should also use it just before planting seeds in your lawn or garden for optimal growth. Using your lawn aerator on a regular basis will help you to create a beautiful lawn, garden and landscape.
These are just a few of the ways that you can help to keep your garden healthy and beautiful.
