Gardening in Britain can be a frustrating occupation. There are those hardy perennials such as roses that keep returning year after year, but finding garden plants that will tolerate the extremes of both winter frosts and summer droughts yet reliably produce beautiful flowers to cheer us can be a bit of a challenge. Plus any sharp frosts and hosepipe bans will always throw a curve ball at any of our horticultural aspirations.

During droughts, look for Mediterranean garden plants with silver leaves and a strong scent, like lavender or rosemary. The oil on the leaves creates a sun screen to reduce water loss, they have deep roots which tap into reserves during summer and do most of their growing during the winter.

Lavender produces sweet smelling mauve flowers right through the summer months which attracts bees and rosemary’s aromatic leaves are wonderful with roast lamb plus it produces an attractive bush and a pretty small light mauve flower.

Some plants are able to store water in their stems, bulbs and leaves, whilst others have tap roots that efficiently tap into any moisture that is around. Lupins are sensibly tall plants that provide pretty blue flowers plus good architectural planting. More exotic flowers such as dahlias which are not that native to Britain have adapted quite well and produce large balls of colour from white, light yellow, coral pink, mauve, orange through to deep red, and poppies will make an attractive splash of red colour across any town or country garden.

Gardening with basic garden tools like a good fork to aerate the soil and a hoe to attack those nasty weeds will help to create a canopy of leaf cover which again helps to regulate water loss during a drought. Plus water well both morning and evening if there is no ban. Also a covering of gravel can help to filter difficult rain and protect plants and seeds in the winter and helps to conserve water in the summer.

There are a few options when trying to grow and maintain summer plants, if you’re an impatient gardener and want beautiful flowers in your garden straight away why not opt for plug plants. If you are that type of individual who likes see the progress of their gardening, then why not plant some garden bulbs of some beautiful summer tulips.

Many people want to attract butterflies to their homes with a basic backyard landscaping idea and for good reason. Abundant amounts of butterflies make the backyard more attractive and the butterflies help the flowers in the backyard grow bigger by pollinating the plants. There are several things that a person can do to attract butterflies with a backyard landscaping idea and create an inviting place where butterflies love to roam.

Although different varieties of butterflies may be present in the location, most butterflies have the same needs. By providing the things that the butterflies need with the backyard landscaping idea, the butterflies will find the backyard a great place for them to live and multiply. A butterfly needs food, a place for their eggs, food for the caterpillars, and places to create their chrysalis. Even small backyard landscaping can provide these four basic needs for the butterflies and as long as they are not disturbed, the butterflies stay year after year.

Making The Backyard Attractive To Butterflies

Butterflies eat nectar and plants that have nectar butterflies like to eat have the best chance of attracting large quantities of butterflies. As a simple backyard landscaping idea, the person should place plants that are pightly colored in shades of red, orange, yellow, purple, or pink blossoms throughout the backyard. The person should also look for blossoms that are clustered together and blossoms with short tubes for holding nectar where the butterflies can get to it. These are the types of flowers that butterflies search for when looking for food.

The plants that provide butterflies with food should be planted in direct sunlight. Butterflies avoid eating in flowers that are located in shaded areas. When planning the backyard landscaping idea, the plants should be placed in areas where they can be covered by pight sunlight during the day. The plants that provide butterflies with the best food generally thrive in direct sunlight, so the plants will not be damaged by getting large amounts of sunlight each day.

Caterpillars will only eat certain types of food and eat constantly when in this stage. As a good backyard landscaping idea, the plants that caterpillars eat should be placed behind flowering plants to hide the damage that caterpillars cause to the plant. Eaten leaves are unattractive but hiding the plant behind plants that caterpillars don’t eat provides a place for caterpillars to live while keeping the backyard looking attractive. By following these few tips to attract butterflies with a basic backyard landscaping idea, a beautiful backyard atmosphere will result that can be enjoyed for many years to come.

In decorating your house, you should choose furniture and decorative items that are both functional and aesthetically appealing. Table lamps provide light and also decorate your room at the same time. There are many kinds of table lamps on the market with various shapes, sizes, colors, and prices.

The first thing you should do before you choose a table lamp is to check the room and the existing furniture. Think about where you are going to place the lamps. Maybe you are going to place them on a table, desk, nightstand, cupboard, or any flat surface you may think of.

Next, think of the size of the lamp that is best for the room. You may need to measure the place where you plan to place your table lamp to ensure you buy the right size. If you have small children, place them on higher surface that are unreachable for the kids to prevent them breaking the lamps.

Another issue to consider is the how to plug the lamps to the electricity. Check if the lamp can reach your wall plug or if you need to buy additional electrical cord. If you are going to use additional cord, check how you can place it. Make sure the cord is hidden for safety and aesthetic purpose. If you think it is not possible to place the lamp there, you might consider finding other place for it. You may also consider using other lighting item or decoration rather than a table lamp.

Place the lamp so it will be able to brighten the room as its primary function. If you use it as a reading lamp, make sure the light from the lamp is going to shine on the page you are reading when you are in sitting position. You may need to check the placement with an existing lamp. Wattage is also an important consideration when buying a lamp.

Your lamp should match your interior style and color. Styles that are popular in interior designs are modern, minimalist, shabby chic, classic, elegant, and some other styles. Also consider the prominent materials in the room.

Now you can choose the best lamp for your room and house. It is preferable to buy higher quality items which you can use for a long time with no problems than low quality ones. As soon as you bring the item home, give it a test run. If the placing is not ideal, find somewhere else to place it.

One of the most uncommon lamps I’ve ever seen is an arc floor lamp. This really is something that only specific folks will probably be interested in and like. It’s just a lamp which is arched in shape and gives an arched light source. Classic floor lamps will stand up straight and offer light outward, but the arc gives a much better advantage. For example, you’ll be able to have the arc go above some furniture and you can get more direct light. It could arc over the sofa and shine directly down on the coffee table. And I believe this is where individuals like it.

The big issue for some folks is that that is really a bold issue to do. It is not one thing that you just see in many homes and I know numerous individuals just like to keep it easy. If you are an individual that is seeking to be bold and various then this can be some thing that you simply should definitely think about. Not only will you have a really unique style for your room, but you’ll have a lot greater lighting that you won’t get from a classic light.

The vast majority of these lamps that you’re going to discover is going to be contemporary. It is something that just seems to fit a lot better in a new home with a far more modern day look.

I also know that minimalists like this too. These are the individuals that try to maintain things very simple. They want rooms that have the bare minimum of items and furniture in it. Having a basic arcing lamp, you’ll be able to get just as much\ light as you would get with numerous regular lamps. It just makes a great deal of sense for this kind of design.

The cool factor is that you just can get some very intriguing looking lamps though. Since LED technology is growing and getting much more integrated into our lights, they have come up with fascinating things. I hung a picture towards the right of an arced lamp that bends. That is completely a modern day look and some may well even say futuristic. As you’ll be able to see this really is really a bold move and it takes the right kind of individual to attempt a thing like that.

A quick way to add both light and charm to any garden is by adding solar garden ornaments. These little LED lights can brighten up a dark corner with whimsy and because of their solar energy can work where you cannot add an extension cord.

Solar lights make an excellent way to enjoy a garden more than you were able to in the past. Cool dusky hours make the perfect time to get a breath of fresh cool air while moving safely through the garden with the lighting provided by the solar ornaments. You will be able to see each step you take if the ornaments are placed carefully.

In addition to lighting a path, solar ornaments can add fun to the garden. According to your own taste, you might choose holiday ornaments, flowers or gnomes that can add light to your garden. Solar cells will provide all the needed power so that lights shine for hours after it gets dark in the garden.

Summer is the perfect time to display birds or insects suspended by a wire from tree limbs. Stick ornaments can be added in beds or along pathways to add both interest and light. You will find butterflies, turtles, frogs and fiber optic lights that can be added to the garden.

As the nights begin to cool for autumn you may want to change the ornaments on display. Some solar Halloween decorations flash on a regular basis while others are sound or light activated. With the solar cells you do not have to worry about the dangers of someone tripping over the extension cords or the danger they provide when it starts to rain.

Solar wreaths make it possible to have a lighted Christmas wreath on your door. The solar cell is built into the wreath to provide the needed power. Solar Christmas trees, lights and ornaments are a wonderful way to decorate for the season without increasing your power bill.

Spring is the perfect time to add the pastel colored lights to the garden. The pastels reflect the pinks and yellows of many springtime flowers. They provide light so you can go out and enjoy the fresh air of spring.

Solar lights are available in many different colors. Solar garden ornaments may be changed seasonally or left in place for the entire year. Your garden looks great and the display can make it the envy of the neighborhood.

We all know that when we are putting a home together it can be very expensive; the best way to make this easier on your pocket is to buy things from a lot of different places instead of just heading to a store and getting it all together.

Shop around and check out places that you wouldn’t normally think of, such as market places, garage sales, Craigslist and even neighbours. The amount of stuff you can pick up from the classified ads is amazing.

The used furniture for sale on the Craigslist site is generally good quality with very little wear and tear. You can save 50% or more on what you would pay at a store.

If you like a good rummage, then you’ll love garage sales. Amongst the junk there are some surprising finds to be had.

Yard sales can be a lot of fun if you go to them realistically and don’t set your expectations too high. On the plus side you get to actually see the stuff as opposed to just a picture and there are no charges to shipping as its instant purchase. There are dedicated yard sale addicts who plan their weekends around these sales.

Market sales will also generally have merchandise at reduced prices but check the quality before you buy. One good things about markets is that you may find craftsmen selling their own goods, and you can get these for a real bargain.

If you had your own yard or garage sale, would you want old junk from your home on display to the neighborhood? Me neither, and that’s why these kind of sales held at a neighbors house generally contain good quality stuff, even if it isn’t theirs and they are selling it on for family or friends.

These don’t come around often enough unfortunately, so grab the chance of a bargain whenever you can.

Vinyl is sometimes known by its chemical name polyvinyl chloride or the abbreviation PVC. It is a polymer compound meaning that a single chemical subunit forms the building block which is polymerized to form very long molecular chains. When it is polymerized, vinyl takes on a solid form. This solid form may be flexible if there are additives such as pthalates in the mix. The result is a durable, indestructible material.

PVC products are found in homes also in the form of vinyl doors and windows. They are attractive for two reasons. One, they are relatively cheap as a construction material. Two, they are quite durable as they do not suffer from warpage and cracking in the sun and rain.

There are a few problems associated with vinyl doors. They tend to be much uglier than fiberglass or wood doors. Also repair is near impossible except for very particular cases. In most circumstances it is better to replace the entire unit when it is damaged through trauma.

Vinyl lags a bit behind steel and wood as a material for doors.

Nevertheless the aesthetics of wooden doors is compromised by the upkeep needed to keep the surface attractive. Even after only one year, because of the door being exposed to the sun or moisture, the surface may begin to peel or crack. In terms of costs, wood doors normally are more expensive because they last longer before needing maintenance work to be done and they usually have more than one year warranty.

The steel door is categorized as being less classic when compared to a wooden door but is regarded as being probably the most commonly utilized kind of door in most houses. This type of door is very durable and very affordable. Even though the metal surface of a steel door could get hot or cold during extreme conditions, the core could be reinforced with insulating foam to boost the energy efficiency of a steel door.

Garlic growing requires the right climate and soil. There are three main groups of garlic, but we will be focusing on white garlic.

The growth of your garlic depends on where you live. A lot of garlic is grown in Central America to California and all the way up to New York. Garlic from New York is purple, while garlic from California is silver.

Soil preparation for your garlic:

The pH of the soil should be around 6.5 unless planted in soils containing limestone. The soil should be drained well and fertile. You should lime your soil on a monthly basis. Compost is a must and it needs to be well rotted to provide the most benefits for the plants.

When is the best time to plant?

Garlic growing is a long term commitment. If you live in a warm climate, you can plant in early winter. These plants will remain dormant for several weeks. The winter months are necessary in order to establish the roots and the shoots that will turn into buds. The side buds will turn into garlic cloves as spring sets in. Some gardeners like to grow in early spring, but will face many problems like poor root growth. The plants can be grown in autumn if you’re in an area that’s temperatures are mild. The plants will have a root system and possibly a small growth above ground but with heavy mulching they will withstand the cold temperatures, snow and ice of the winter months. When spring arrives then the mulch should be removed.

How to plant garlic:

Garlic is planted like all other bulb plants. The biggest end is the bottom and the biggest clove seeds are used and placed in the ground so they are standing upright. About an inch of dirt needs to cover the top of the clove and they need to be spaced about four inches apart.

Successful growing:

Garlic is a difficult plant to successfully home garden. Inferior seed cloves, weather conditions, soil conditions, the wrong variety for the area, diseases that can attack the plants all make it difficult to have success. It is severely important to have the best drainage possible. Commercially grown garlic clove seeds are treated before planting which is something the home gardener cannot accomplish. Gardeners in colder regions will have better luck if the seed and soil is heavily treated prior to planting. Though moisture is a big problem for garlic, during dry periods they must be well watered. Consult an expert to be sure you are using the correct variety for your area. Once harvested, the bulbs should be stored in a dry, well ventilated place at a temperate of about 50 degrees F.

This does not mean that you have to dump decorating your home this autumn season; it only means that you have to be a bit more resourceful and autumn themed candles and accessories are the perfect solution.

Festive Harvest Mantle Display: A simple and quick design for the season is to clear out all your decorative accents from your mantle and place a simple autumn garland over the top and position candles in deep harvest shades within the garland. To be safe, look at using battery operated candles that still give that flickering glow only without the threat of a real burning candle.

Flirty Fall Bedroom: Nothing sparks romance more that the gentle glow of a candle. To provide a touch of autumn luxury, use candles in fun fall themed holders. You not only get the amorous mood, but a reminder of frigid nights to come that will make you wish to curl up close.

Fabulous Autumn Table Decor: Why use a traditional centerpiece when you can end up with a stunning focal point of autumn candles in the middle of the table?
